When doors started to close, small businesses had two options, adapt or fail. 

Companies that rely on storefronts such as bakeries might not have realized the importance of a strong online presence but having to close the doors for a time puts things into perspective. Online marketplaces are here to stay, but you can learn from their success. 

The best example of a successful online marketplace is Amazon. When it opened, Amazon was a discount marketplace selling books. As they sold more books, more users came to the site, and in response, suppliers wanted to market and sell on the site. The concept snowballed, turning Amazon from a book reseller to one of the world’s largest online marketplaces.

Maybe you’re not the next Amazon, but you don’t need to be. All you need to do is supplement in-store sales with online sales. Here are three reasons to start an online marketplace for your bakery.

Make Some Money

Couches are comfy, TVs are big, and the online shopping can deliver almost anything. Why would anyone leave the house? Shoppers are becoming more and more used to shopping online for everything they need. Food delivery is relatively new, though, so there is a large market coming of age where they can have dinner and dessert delivered from many places that used to be dine-in only. You can’t afford to miss out on this opportunity. Whether you want to deliver baked goods yourself or rely on services like Uber Eats or Postmates, make them available for order. 

What else can you sell online? Selling baked goods for delivery isn’t the only thing you can offer, though. Make recipe kits where your customers can recreate some of your best items at home. Sell merchandise like shirts and mugs or something simple like stickers or buttons.

Speaking of merchandise, nothing works better than a t-shirt or bumper sticker for free advertising. Opening an online store to sell marketing merchandise is a standard for many companies. Pens, mugs, shirts, etc., all make excellent brand ambassadors. You have a logo, social media, and a website. Slap them on merchandise, and let your customers do the marketing legwork for you!

Mutual Benefits with Suppliers

What else can you do? 

Resell. You have suppliers. You purchase ingredients and cooking supplies all the time, so why not buy a little more and resell it for a profit? How does Amazon make money? They mark up merchandise before listing it for sale. You can do the same. 

Selling merchandise at a markup is an easy win for you, but by becoming a reseller, your supplier is selling more, too. Negotiate discounts or lock up exclusive products to see directly on your online marketplace. 

Overall, opening an online marketplace is a simple, powerful way to drive traffic to your website, increase revenue, and attract new manufacturers and customers.

The Origin

One of the most prominent themes Sheffie refers back to is business owners’ needs to save time. Over and over, we hear about how DIY websites are inexpensive, but the time-suck destroys productivity. Where can companies go to consolidate all of their tools? 

Sheffie talks about the costs incurred by using various tools spread over several other services. Sites like GoDaddy give very cheap website options, but start adding in email services like Mailchimp. Add in Asana, Analytics, Security plugins, etc., and the costs go through the roof. 

Shamrck brings together everything onto one platform at one cost. Most importantly, Shamrck lets business owners outsource vital tasks that would typically take entire days. 

 

You Don’t Have to Do It All.

If there’s anything that we can learn from the pandemic is companies big and small need help sometimes. For many entrepreneurs and solopreneurs, the biggest realization is that outsourcing is not only possible but required for specific tasks. 

As Sheffie recounts, it’s easy for business owners to look past self-care and focus only on work. The idea that you have to do it all is wrong, plain and simple.Brother M-T puts it best when he talks about the Gates and Zuckerbergs out there that sit in a room 24/7 and grind out a product are the exceptions, not the rule. We have spouses, children, hobbies…a life! At some point, we have to bring in help. 

 

 

Going Beyond Business

The most important thing entrepreneurs can do is take care of themselves. A sound body and mind are the only way to maintain a successful business. Without the right mindset, the quality of your work and the work of your employees can suffer. Taking time to understand what you need is every bit as valuable as what the business needs, even if that means 30 minutes with some Chick-Fil-A fries and a lemonade.

There is life outside of work. Services like Shamrck help you realize opportunities you can miss when you’re too wrapped up in researching the best third-party applications to put on the homepage of your website. Recently, our very own Sheffie Robinson made an appearance on Unpolished MBA. Unpolished MBA is a podcast dedicated to looking at the value of startup experience instead of corporate experience. The idea isn’t that one is better than the other, but instead, they explore the value in both. 

Sheffie went on to discuss her experience with entrepreneurship and how it relates to her MBA program. The idea that someone needs to complete an MBA program to have the knowledge and skills to start a business is completely flipped on its head when Sheffie talks about her accomplished career as an entrepreneur before going through the program. 

 

How It Began

Sheffie talks about her start as a small business owner at age 6 when she started reselling candy at a markup. At age 6! Being self-taught in coding, Sheffie showed her entrepreneurial spirit by creating intricate tools for game currency. In 2015, she opened her first software development firm called Touco Direct. In 2019, Sheffie launched WPClover as a development and hosting platform, and in 2020, she merged it all to make Shamrck Software, a full website and business management suite. 

 

Why Get an MBA Now as an Entrepreneur?

Sheffie explains that despite already being an entrepreneur, getting an MBA is validating. Starting as a self-taught coder, there is a stigma as a one-trick pony. Are you really a coder, or did you just learn one little trick? Being a black woman in tech, especially, presents a unique challenge where people don’t want to believe that you accomplished something on your own. She recalls having people look her up on LinkedIn right on the spot just to make sure she’s not just putting her name on someone else’s work. The MBA speaks volumes to a particular crowd who want to know you have the “credentials” to back up your words.

There’s also the idea that people expect you to have an MBA. For Sheffie, people assumed that because she’s an entrepreneur, she already completed the program. Graduating an MBA program is self-validating too. You know you have the skills to run a business, but now you have the proof. 

 

The Pros and Cons

MBAs have a lot to offer. Learning about things like corporate finance and understanding how to be a better financial steward for her company. Sheffie talks about working with ideas like differentiating fundraising tactics when you have physical products versus software. 

Conversely, Sheffie discusses the gaps between higher education curriculum and real-world cases. These curriculums don’t necessarily keep up with the times and can leave students lacking in certain areas. Since her program is done in cohorts, she’s able to share some of her real-world knowledge with classmates who otherwise might miss out.

Sheffie Robinson, founder and CEO of Shamrck Software, has been announced the winner of Databird Business Journal’s 2020 Women in Business Rising Star award for female entrepreneurs under 40. Sheffie beat out female entrepreneurs from across the country for the prestigious award. 

Databird Business Journal is a website and publication with a focus on women’s empowerment in business to help achieve a just and sustainable world. The journal works with experts around the country to deliver content and insights from a dynamic group of industry leaders. 

The 2020 Women in Business Awards are a celebration of the top women around the business world. Categories included Entrepreneur of the Year (1-25 Employees), Entrepreneur of the Year (25-100 Employees), and Entrepreneur of the Year – Nonprofit, among others. Sheffie’s work over the last 12 months as the head of Shamrck Software earned the Rising Star award for female entrepreneurs under 40. 

Sheffie’s start as an entrepreneur began at age 12 when she started coding software. Through years of hard work and perseverance, Sheffie launched Touco Direct in 2015. In 2019, Sheffie launched WPClover to help small business owners create a website. In 2020, the two companies merged into Shamrck Software
